Greetings from the Hive!

Hard at work

I am Queen Drucilla V. Until this year, my subjects and I have enjoyed a prosperous life. Now, on the brink of my retirement, my bee colony is in a crisis. Pollen is scarce this year, my worker bees can’t produce enough honey for everyone to get a full ration, and part of the hive is starting to crumble.

The truth is, we won’t make it through the winter unless I go to work. Ever since I was a little princess, I have wanted to be a journalist. So now I am going to try it out. But I’m not just any journalist. In particular, I want to meet characters from other books and hear about their strange and fascinating lives. It is such a great advantage to our colony that we have all learned how to read, but that is another story.

After giving it a lot of thought, I have decided to run a series of interviews. I told Dalton – that’s my advisor – the he should arrange for a guest each week. I suggested we do it on Friday, in case our guest would like to stay for the weekend. Dalton thought the interviews were a good idea, he had never heard of anything like that before. My ladies of court agreed. He seemed a a bit skeptical about inviting the guests to spend the weekend here. Now where is his sense of community, I ask. Both Dalton and my court bee thought I should use a pen name. They thought Queen Drucilla V. might be too intimidating for the common folk. So call me Drucilla B. Queen instead. Do you think my guests with still recognize me as the queen?

So here we go! Dalton is organizing the thing and I am interviewing the characters and writing the book reviews. It’s exciting. Maybe someday we’ll be invited to go somewhere too. I would like to visit a television. Wouldn’t that be a kick?

My first interview is next Friday. Hope to see you there!

I was born quite a long time ago on the Mississippi River, in the Quad-Cities, to be exact. I have since traded in the Mississippi for the Moselle in Germany, but I can hardly imagine not living near water. I am by nature a writer. I love to put words together that make an impact, conjure up a dream or cause a tear to roll down a cheek. It is the one clear talent I have brought to the world.
